Maintenance is a daily occurrence that takes place at approximately 6 am EST and aims at updating the coding of the game. However, maintenance does happen frequently unexpected. This leaves several players confused. This happens when EA is introducing new aspects to the game such as promotional events, cards, design or programming codes. The maintenance can also occur when EA has discovered a glitch and are patching the glitch.
So how long time does maintenance take? The daily maintenance usually takes about 10 minute to half an hour. New features or cards are usually introduced in the daily updates and can be done without further downtime. Glitches however can take an indefinite time to patch and therefore can be down anywhere from a few minutes to several days. The big glitch from last fall took almost an entire weekend, leaving players frustrated to no end.
